ANSWERED: The Black Design Aesthetic Thesis
My thesis, ANSWERED: The Black Design Aesthetic, explores the importance of assembling and documenting the Black aesthetic in American graphic design. This work aims to acknowledge the significant contributions and influences of the Black perspective and tradition. By creating a comprehensive history and documentation of diverse Black graphic works, we can identify distinct formal elements and affirm the existence of a Black aesthetic, thereby incorporating it into the broader narrative of American graphic design history.
During my research of identifying the black aesthetic, I began creating posters using the formal elements that I identified. I wanted to explore what I can do by taking inspiration from my visual research and designing the posters that address contemporary topics.
